Buster Posey Injury Reignites Debate

Buster Posey came to the attention of Floridians while playing college baseball at Florida State University, but rapidly hit the national scene by playing in the big leagues with the San Francisco Giants, a team currently atop the rankings as World Series champions. But last week, Posey hit severe snag in his early career after a crash with Scott Cousins of the Florida Marlins led to a broken fibula. Perhaps most daunting is that Seminoles’ fans were privileged to watch their boy play absolutely every single game without fail, but Giants fans will now have to wait until next season before seeing Posey don the uniform for a big game.

The injury has caused some important debate among commentators. Cousins and Posey collided at home plate, sparking concern over the vulnerability of a catcher who stands directly in the line of fire. Giants coach Bruce Bochy was quoted as saying, “I think we do need to consider changing the rules here a little bit because the catcher is so vulnerable and there’s so many who have gotten hurt… And not just a little bit, had their careers ended or shortened.”

Opponents argue that this is all part of the game. Calling it a tradition, some say that its as common to baseball as ‘Cracker Jacks and peanuts’. Perhaps. But in the name of fun, it’s always wise to think of ways to prevent future injuries. Bochy may have a point.

Memorial Day Meaning

Today marks the start of a summer to come while still housing the memories of fallen soldiers long gone. Memorial Day, the proverbial ‘end of school’ holiday (contrasted with Labor Day as the ‘beginning of school’ holiday), is often confused with Veterans Day for reasons that make perfect sense. Both deal with our military and both are considered national days of remembrance. But what makes Memorial Day unique is that it honors the fallen, rather than just those who have served.

What began in 1868 as a way to commemorate the tens of thousands who gave their lives in the Civil War has gradually come to include the loved ones who lost their lives in every battle, war, or military conflict since that time. For more than 100 years, Memorial Day was the unofficial way for families and friends to reconsider the losses that paid for their continued freedoms. It wasn’t until 1971 that Congress, under the signing pen of President Richard Nixon, agreed to call this a national holiday. Now, at 3pm on Memorial Day, most of the nation stops for a moment of silence to recall the countless individuals who paid the ultimate sacrifice in favor of their country’s best interest.

The Brace Shop also honors the fallen by supporting the living. We provide military discounts to all branches of the military. This includes the US Military, Canadian Military and British Military. We ship all over the world to supply our active serviceman and servicewomen with the highest quality products available.

The Doomsday Press

Last week, the Brace Shop mentioned that experts are questioning the remains of Tiger Woods’ career.  Hogwash, he says.  “It’s certainly not the doomsday that some of the press members are writing about.  I was certainly a lot more concerned back in ’08.  That was very difficult.  A lot of pain.  This one’s a cake-walk compared to that one.”  The ‘one’ he was referring had been a ruptured ACL and two broken bones that held him back from winning the U.S. Open in 2008; injuries that would keep almost anyone from winning a major title.

Perhaps there is great irony in the fact that Woods referred to a ‘doomsday’-hungry media.  After all, the ‘Doomsday prophet’, Harold Camping, who self-predicted that May 21st would be the end of the world, was wrong.  Not that many people were sitting on the edge of their seats waiting for the end, but Camping, president of Family Radio, is hanging onto the money that he acquired from followers who supported his declaratory campaign.  In other words, right or wrong about a doomsday scenario, both Camping and Woods can still take their careers to the bank for as long as the doomsday media gives them attention.

Let it be said that the Brace Shop has not predicted any kind of Woods fall.  We have merely shared the expert opinion that swirls around a digressing athlete whose star power is waning.

Preventable Back Injuries

Everyone says they know how to lift a box or carry a pile of books and yet the statistics show that Americans still overwhelmingly fail to take steps to prevent back injuries.  Patients land in the emergency room on numerous occasions because of silly mistakes that end in throbbing or even excruciating pain.  Physicians spend a great deal of their resources and time teaching everyday people how to take care of their backs so as to avoid a frightening snap or crack.  So why is this still a nagging problem in our society?  Because at the end of the day, Americans are still in a hurry to do their jobs without feeling that a single lift or a single movement could cause serious damage.

A brief reminder about how to prevent back injuries is not only good for our backs, but for our overall wellbeing.  Many of the most common injuries are incurred by nursing assistants or children taking care of a parent who have a need to move the adult from one position to another, thus requiring a great deal of strain on the lower back.  This being just one example, below are several ways to consider ‘prevantable back injuries’.

(1) Think before you lift.  If you need help, get it.  If you need to reposition yourself, do it.

(2) Keep your back straight, keep your head up, and lift with your legs (one of the most popular, forgotten reminders).

(3) Try to avoid twisting your waist during a lift so that the weight stays primarily at your center.

A simple strain can not only ruin a day of work, but has the potential to end a rising career.  Let’s take care of ourselves.

In the case that you have, however, already injured your back and need support, contact the Brace Shop today.  Our Back Shop is filled with braces and supports for those who suffer almost any kind of back injury.  Each item comes highly recommended at a reasonable cost to you.  No one can beat The Brace Shop prices, their service and their huge selection. DWTS Crowns a Winner…

Dancing with the Stars crowned a new winner on Tuesday night: Kym Johnson and Hines Ward!  Their win comes as no surprise to fans of DWTS, but fighting through to the finale required a great deal of poise and stamina after what they endured just 10 days earlier.  Last week, the Brace Shop reported that Johnson had been rushed to an L.A. hospital after an accidental injury during rehearsals with Ward.  At the time, little was known about how she received her neck injury, but the past week has produced quite a bit more insight into what happened.

Ward, an all-star receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers, had been hoisting Johnson into the air for a lift when his feet slipped from under him, she fell, and his entire weight pressed her neck into the floor.  Yikes!  After being carted to a nearby hospital, doctors said she had a ‘sprained C7 vertebrae’ and would require a neck brace to continue in the competition.  Seemed like it was over for the team.

Said Ward, “I was sick.  You never wanna see your partner… we’ve been together for 10 weeks and that Friday was the worst Friday ever, to see your partner carted off and just being in the hospital with her and going over the MRIs.  You start contemplating, what could I have done?  Could I have prevented the fall?”

Second-guessing himself and his actions is, perhaps, the most endearing attributes of his fame.  Ward was one of the most vocal players in Pittsburgh to voice frustration at QB Ben Rothlisberger after the star was repeatedly accused of sexual misconduct and yet failed to apologize for any wrongdoing on his part.  In the case of DWTS, Ward was the first to say, “I take the blame.”  And having earned the coveted crown for ‘Dancing’, both Johnson and Ward can be proud to acknowledge their win came in spite of a terrifying injury that could have been much, much worse.

Reese in Pieces

Acclaim and stardom hasn’t made Reese Witherspoon impervious to injury.  Fans who noticed the Legally Blond actress wearing a cast on her left foot last week were puzzled that they knew nothing about it.  It took almost two days for Reese’s agent to publically announce that the cast was no big deal.  “She twisted her ankle and is in a walking cast temporarily.  Nothing serious.”  And thank goodness.  The media would have had a field day if there were any suspicion that the injury came from new husband Jim Toth.  Witherspoon is America’s sweetheart!

The A-list actress is now starring opposite Twilight vampire Robert Pattinson in the new film Water for Elephants.  The plot is based on a 2006 novel by the same name, involving an elderly man who recounts his life in memories.  Jacob Jankowski, played by Pattinson, remembers hearing of his parents’ death and fleeing to a train that he ultimately discovers to be a circus car.  Naturally, Jankowski ‘joins the circus’ (as they say) and ends up falling in love with the wife of the animals’ head trainer.  The wife, played by Witherspoon, is a charming yet guarded woman who fears the wrath of her husband.  What happens in this tale of forbidden romance is the subject of the film and novel.

As usual, Reese delivers a remarkable performance even though her ankle is currently in pieces.  Poor girl.

The Modern Spartan

The Spartans once told of a boy soldier who hid a fox under his garments to lick a severe wound that, if discovered, would cause him dishonor in the community.  If that boy were to be living today, he’d be in Great Britain and his name would be Tommy Hill.  Both an international superstar and a legend in the world of motorcycle racing, Hill has had both his spleen and one kidney removed as the result of a motocross accident early in his career.  More recently, he crashed onto his shoulder, tearing a ligament and later learning that he had officially broken his collarbone.

As legends go, Hill didn’t take a broken collarbone as an excuse to stop racing.  On the contrary, when it happened, he said, “this is the worst type of break you can get on your collarbone… [but] I have to keep thinking I will be fit enough in two weeks’ time.”  He would later say, “If I rest it, then it will heal itself, with the process taking effect in 8 to 10 days, so I’ll see how I get on.”  Normal people have surgery and sit out their normal activities for 8 to 10 weeks.   He has had almost every kind of therapy known to man as an attempt to avoid the surgical route for fear that surgery would, itself, remove his name from contention.  In English terms, we call that superhuman.

Injury Update: Troy Polamalu

While Hines Ward awaits the return of his DWTS dancing partner who was hurt last Saturday with a neck injury, another Pittsburgh Steeler is in the midst of recovery as well.  Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu has been in recovery from an injury to his Achilles tendon suffered during an interception return for a touchdown against the Cincinnati Bengals last December.

Although Polamalu earned the honor of being called 2010’s defensive player of the year in spite of his late season injury, the damage to his foot showed in the postseason where, even in the Super Bowl, he was far less explosive than fans have come to expect.  Right now, in an effort to maintain his status, the star safety is getting treatment and undergoing rehabilitation in Los Angeles with an orthopedic surgeon who often works with Steelers players.

The team expects him to be fully healed by the time training camp returns, but no one knows if there will even be a training camp this year.  If, for some legal reason, the NFL goes on infinite hiatus, Polamalu has other options.  During the offseason, he completed his undergraduate degree in history from the University of Southern California and last week walked the stage to receive his diploma.  The reason, he said, was to emphasize for young people that sports is not and should not ever be a replacement for education.  Well done, Troy.

Woods’ Career in Question

The storied career of Tiger Woods has gone through far more ups than downs, but experts are now questioning the golfer’s most recent injury and whether this may cripple his future in the game.  On Thursday, Woods pulled out of the Players’ Championship after saying that it was related to a continued problem with his knee.  The man has already undergone three surgeries on the same leg, which leads many to speculate that this is simply the beginning of the end.

Golfing produces far more knee injuries than one might imagine.  To create the perfect swing, a golfer has to be prepared for the sudden and controlled twist that comes from a complete follow-through.  Enough of these swings done right or even wrong and the body can only take so much.  This isn’t to say that every golfer endures an onslaught of injuries.  On the contrary, injury is usually the result of poor conditioning and preparation, although no one would probably believe that Woods is without proper assistance off the course.  What he may need to do is take a few years off, rather than a few months.

DWTS Dancer Down

Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) is now in its twelfth season, emerging as a commercial success on many levels.  Each year, a host of stars take their turn on the dance floor to strut their stuff and see who America loves the most.  The show has crowned winners from Emmitt Smith and Drew Lachey to Brooke Burke and Jennifer Gray.  Over the weekend, however, DWTS fans learned some troubling news.  Kym Johnson injured her neck during rehearsals with Hines Ward of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Johnson was taken to an L.A. hospital on Friday where, after several tests, she was cleared to go home with a neck brace.  Less than a week before, Ralph Macchio (aka, the original Karate Kid) was injured because of cyst in his knee.  The challenge of winning a competition of this level is that fans want to see their stars do things on the dance floor that no one has done before.  In order to achieve the unbelievable, their practices involve a great deal of trial and error; error being the key word.

Johnson, whose true stardom as a professional ballroom dancer is more well known in Australia, has given her talent to DWTS in almost every season since the beginning.  Her partners have been remarkably diverse, ranging from Jerry Springer and Joey Fatone (NSync) to Warren Sapp and David Hasselhoff.
