Green Bay Packers Tom Crabtree Shoulder Injury

Photo by Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images

Who hasn’t heard about the infamous NFL temporary refs call on last Monday’s Green Bay Packers vs. Seattle Seahawks game? By now it has blown up just about every headline in sports news, and will probably be one of the highlights for the entire season. In that same game, a number of Packer players had to sit on the sidelines due to previously incurred injuries.

A not so happy Tom Crabtree viewed from afar the night’s horrendous encounter as he rested and recovered from a shoulder strain. Crabtree originally suffered his injury when playing against Cincinnati in August. At that time his doctor informed him that his shoulder would not worsen, but that Crabtree must take some recreational time to recuperate. On Wednesday Crabtree practiced in full in preparation for Sunday’s game.
The most mobile joint in your entire body is that of your shoulder, thus enabling it to perform a number of duties including: lifting boxes, pushing a lawn mower, and other vigorous physical activities. Shoulder ailments, like any other injury, can range in form from sever to moderate.  A shoulder injury can occur in various forms, one the most common being a sprain.  It’s important with any abnormal pain to seek medical attention right away to rule out and prevent a more serious condition
The Brace Shop provides the latest shoulder immobilizers in Pediatric & adult sizes for post-injury and post-surgical care. They also offer a complete selection of arm slings & Elevators for all types of shoulder conditions such as rotator cuff repairs, Bankart repairs, capsular shifts, glenohumeral dislocations/subluxation & soft tissue repairs/strains.

Josh Wolf Recovers From Herniated Disk Surgery

Josh Wolf underwent lower back surgery last week to repair an injury that resulted in a herniated disk. Wolf is an infamous MLS player for the American team United Forward; he has played in the 2002 and 2006 world cup championships. A 15 year veteran in the major leagues, this season Wolf was named assistant coach for United. It is unclear at this time when Wolf will be able to return to the field due to the extensive recovery time required for herniated disk surgery.

Most people who experience a herniated disk do not need surgery, with the proper back brace it will heal on its own over time. About 50% of people with a herniated disc in the low back recover within 1 month. And within 6 months, 96% recover.

When a disc herniation occurs, the cushioning or padding that sits between the spinal vertebras is pushed outside its normal position. This causes irritation of the spinal nerves, resulting in excruciating pain and disability. Degeneration of the intervertebral disc from a combination of factors (age, trauma) can result in herniation, particularly at the L4-5 and L5-S1 levels. The Brace Shop sells a variation of back braces that you can sort through based on customer feedback, popularity, quality of product and sales volume. Abdominal and back muscles are important to the musculoskeletal network providing strength to keep the body upright. When these muscles are in poor condition, additional stress is applied to the spine. It is extremely urgent that you seek medical attention if you experience any unusual back pain or involved in a trauma, when left untreated this sort of abnormality can result in permanent incapacitating damage.

iPhone 5 and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Were you one of the lucky 2 million Apple devotees to preorder an iPhone 5 a few weeks ago? After 24 hours Apple had to stop taking requests because of the overwhelming response they received to their new product. Today many of you will be holding this new technology in your hands already, and maybe even reading this article on an iPhone 5!

Did you know though that there is a serious condition associated with being on your phone too much? RSI (Repetitive Stress Injury) is used as an umbrella term to include ailments that can befall too much texting, including carpal tunnel, and trigger finger. Carpal tunnel syndrome frequently results from excessive texting along with extreme usage. Carpal tunnel from too much phone usage most commonly affects a person’s thumbs, but has been known to arise in the entire hand and wrist.  The effects of carpal tunnel syndrome come as cramping, swelling, tingling, and pain that can occur quite severely and last for several days.

Trigger finger is also a painful condition that happens in people who frequently work where they are required to repetitively grip objects, such as a phone. The finger will stick in a bent position and snap when straightened causing a surge of pain.

When not treated properly, RSI disorders can heal incorrectly and cause permanent damage. The Brace Shop sells a wide variety of thumb splints and wrist braces, placing a specific emphasis on quality to aid restoration of injured limbs. Wrist/Forearm Splints provide maximum immobilization of the forearm, wrist and hand. These braces are usually indicated post-surgery, post-fracture casting, carpal tunnel syndrome and severe wrist sprains and strains. Thumb Spica Wrist Braces offer additional immobilization for the thumb area, they are generally indicated for soft tissue injuries, gamekeeper injuries, collateral ligament support and avulsion fractures of the thumb.

Knee Injury Repeat for Jason Hammel

Jason HammelThe starting pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles, Jason Hammel, might have to miss a start after re-injuring his right knee recently. Back in July of 2012, Hammel underwent a successful arthroscopic surgery on his injured right knee. An MRI performed earlier this month after the accident came back negative for any structural damage, but Hammel will still be sitting out at least one game due to the pain and swelling preventing him from moving freely. Re-injuring a knee can cause life time damage, which means Hammel will need to rest and strengthen his knee extensively before returning to the field. Experts are optimistic about Hammel’s recovery though, and he is expected to return to start towards the end of September.

In baseball, joint injuries are very common.  Considering a knee brace at even the slightest pain is important to help strengthen and support the injured joint and prevent further damage. Baseball is a contact sport and engages every muscle in your body, from your ankles, to knees, and even wrists. Many younger kids are participating in competitive baseball nowadays, and an injury at such a young age can be especially critical to deal with immediately and correctly. Regardless of if you are in the MLB like Jason Hammel, or simply playing recreational sports, knee braces are used to help any athlete overcome injuries and continue playing in the game!

It is highly likely that if you play a sport you will eventually be injured no matter how many preventative measures are taken. Now that it’s football, baseball, and basketball season, players will be experiencing various injuries, but a sport brace will help give them a chance to recover and prevent from reinjuring. The Brace Shop provides athletes with not only knee braces, but also neck, shoulder, and ankle braces providing the best quality for value. The Brace Shop supplies braces to hospitals, therapists, sports teams, schools, doctors, nursing homes & military bases around the world. Shop Where The Pros Go! Shop the Brace Shop!

Knee Injury for Eagles’ Center

Philadelphia Eagles are in limbo right now as they just found out Monday morning that their starting center, Jason Kelce will be out for the rest of the NFL season due to a knee injury. Kelce was carried out of the game in the third quarter with a sprained knee and wore a knee brace on his right knee after the Eagles’ win over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday afternoon.

Sources say that Kelce tore his ACL, but nothing is confirmed yet. This knee injury bears good news since he stated to the media that he never had a knee injury or tore a ligament in his life. A lost like this seems to negate such a great win at the end for this team. Suddenly Dallas Reynolds could be this team’s starting center for the rest of the season. Reynolds played well in relief of Kelce, but the Eagles haven’t seen nearly enough of him to be confident in his ability.

Football is famous for action, and also producing injury. Many teenagers play this sport, and as a result of the forces generated, as well as the mismatch in body sizes, injuries to various body parts are common. However, the highest injury rates are seen in the NFL. Also, interestingly, injuries are more common during games, compared to during practice. It is thought that the athletes “play harder” during the game, and are more likely to take risks.

Like stated in a couple blog posts earlier this month, football season brings out the importance of various sports braces that are used for the injured and also to prevent further injuries. The Brace Shop has been providing athletes with their neck, shoulder, knee, and ankle braces at the best prices. No one can beat The Brace Shop prices, their service and their huge selection. September 11: Patriot Day

Between New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington D.C., the final count of lives lost was 2,823. When we imagine how many people would normally work in the World Trade Center on an average day–approximately 50,000–those already tragic numbers could have been significantly higher. Workers and First Responders searched through the wreckage at Ground Zero for 230 days, just under a year, looking for signs of human life. And in the end, the number of World Trade Center survivors rescued was zero. What we remember of that day and that year was the incredible bravery of so many men and women who worked tirelessly day after day without giving up a single ounce of hope.

Today, we remember the fallen of September 11 on what has proudly been called Patriot Day, a time for solemn recognition of all that was lost, all that was given, and all that we have yet to achieve as a nation. Since that fateful day, soldiers have fought courageously on the field of battle, families have rebuilt homes around the loves they cherish, and Americans have continually upheld their faith in the better angels of humanity, believing our people to be capable of more and more everyday.

We at the Brace Shop take this moment in history to acknowledge, with great respect, the sacrifice of all who gave and still give their lives on behalf of a grateful nation.

Quarterbacks On, Quarterbacks Off

Sunday represented the first full day of NFL Football since January. And this season, all eyes were on the quarterbacks, many of whom were new to their team rosters. Robert Griffin III (known as RG3) in Washington, Andrew Luck in Indianapolis, Peyton Manning in Denver. And while Griffin impressed, Luck was average, and Manning dusted himself off from a season ending neck injury, there were other quarterbacks whose prospects for the 2012 season went down in a hurry.

For example, John Skelton was impressive during the preseason, but was carted off the field with a right ankle injury during the fourth quarter while his Arizona Cardinals shut down the Seattle Seahawks. Two players crashed into one another, then landed on Skelton’s leg, giving the reins back to Kevin Kolb, who ended up becoming the hero. Then there was Jake Locker of the Tennessee Titans who, for some apparent reason, tried to re-imagine his role as an offensive tackle, ultimately leaving the game with a left shoulder injury. Rodger Saffold, playing for the St. Louis Rams, endured the most frightening injury, crumpling under the weight of safety John Wendling of the Detroit Lions. Fortunately, Saffold could move his arms and legs, but his neck was definitely hurt.

With all eyes on the new season of professional football, most quarterbacks were on, but others were not. We might even argue it was an ultimately strange day in the NFL, since both Aaron Rodgers of Green Bay and Drew Brees of New Orleans were shut down in their own stadiums.

Our Head and Neck Shop, Ankle Shop, and Shoulder Shop are filled with braces and supports for those who suffer almost any kind of head, neck, ankle, or shoulder injury. NFL Alters the Injured Reserve Landscape

For all the many arguments that described the NFL in 2011–where unions, players, and owners were in a squabble over how to negotiate the future of pro football–the parties seem to be reaching agreements much more easily these days. Most recently, there has been a strategic change in how teams must deal with their roster when it comes to those on injured reserve.

Judy Battista of the New York Times explained the significance of the change with great clarity:

“The new injured reserve rule will allow teams to bring back one player during the season if that player was put on injured reserve during the regular season. The player must have sustained a “major” injury – defined as missing at least six weeks. The player would have to be designated as eligible to return when he is placed on injured reserve. He can return to practice after six weeks and can be activated after eight weeks. That could be an important switch for players like Steelers guard David DeCastro, who injured his knee during the preseason. Under the old rules, any player put on injured reserve was out for the season, but DeCastro and others could return late in the season and for the playoffs. All other players put on injured reserve during the season are out for the year.”

On Wednesday night, the NFL officially begins its 2012 Season as the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants welcome the Dallas Cowboys to MetLife Stadium in Rutherford, New Jersey.

Bach, Famed American Author, Injured in Ironic Plane Crash

Richard Bach is well known for his books about flying and his long held belief that human beings must learn to look beyond their physical limitations. As a pilot in the New Jersey Air National Guard, Bach developed more than an appreciation of flight, but a compelling desire to encourage all men and women to experience life above the clouds. As man of fearless abandon, Bach is now in his late 70s and often flies alone. Such was the case on August 31, when his aircraft caught the cables of a power line during his landing on San Juan Island in the northern archipelago of Washington State, then crashed along the grass outside the runway.

Remarkably, Bach escaped the plane with only a head injury and a broken shoulder. His aircraft was upside down and sparks were flying from the broken cable, yet nothing more serious occurred. This is not to make light of the serious injuries he now battles, but we can be sure that his family and friends are standing by his side at this time.

James Bach, his son, says that “things are looking better” and “doctors are guardedly optimistic.”

We wish Mr. Bach and his family all the best in recovery.

Labor Day Reminders About Workplace Safety

The origins of Labor Day stretch more than 100 years of American history, all the way back to the dawn of labor unions who fought for better working conditions and better pay. On June 28, 1894, Congress and then-president Grover Cleveland made the second Monday of September a national holiday, a time to reflect on the great labors of the workforce. And so, this year, we take into account the massive workforce of 2012, considering not only their contributions, but also the need for continued safety precautions in the workplace.

For those working in the private industry, there were a total of 3,063,400 recordable cases of non-fatal injuries and illnesses in 2010, from data compiled by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. Within that total, 370,130 were from sprains, strains, and tears, 185,270 were from injuries to the back, and 208,470 were caused by falls.

As you take time this Labor Day to reflect on all you’ve done for your employer, your clients, and your community, please remember to think safe and be safe in the days ahead. Injuries happen, but we can minimize their likelihood if we look out for one another. Have a safe and happy holiday.
