Christmas Day in the NBA

By now we’ve all heard the news. The NBA is back. Coming to a court near you on Christmas Day, no less. Talk about a ‘season of giving’.

But for the vast majority of us (you know, the 99.9% of people who don’t have a stake in financial deals between players and owners), the most obvious questions remain: what was the result of all this talk? Was anything achieved? Will players be better protected? Will owners get their fair share? Blah, blah, blah, right? Well, here’s the compromise in a nutshell:

(1) Basketball Related Income (BRI) will be split 50/50 between players and their teams. If, on the other hand, BRI is greater than projections for a given year, players get a bigger share. If BRI is lower than those projections, players get a smaller share (we can already see the yawns in the peanut gallery).

(2) The Salary Cap has been set to the same system it had in 2005.

(3) Minimum Salaries set to the same levels they were in 2005.

(4) Maximum Salries set to the same levels they were in 2005.

And on and on and on…

So basically, you missed a few dozens games this season because the players, the owners, and the intermediate legal authorities needed to decide how best to split their own money. Nothing you didn’t already know.

Now, can we just get back to playing some B-Ball? Christmas Day here we come!
