The last time Frank Gore started a game and ran for no yards was… well… never. The San Francisco 49ers star running back is what they call a work horse. And for the better part of the last decade, he’s been the only good thing going for the team. But now that they’re 8-1 and seriously in the hunt for a First Round Bye in the playoffs, Gore may not be as much of a factor because of a collection of lower body injuries.
On Sunday, Gore went down with a knee injury, saying that someone had ‘twisted’ him up. At the beginning of the year, in the only game San Francisco lost, Gore injured his right ankle against the Dallas Cowboys. If you recall, that was game when a broken-ribbed quarterback named Tony Romo decided to play through his pain, then led the ‘Boys on a game winning drive. But then, just a few weeks later, Gore injured his left ankle against the Washington Redskins. With two feet injured, the Niners’ work horse kept playing until the coaches simply wouldn’t let him back in.
Ultimately, for this game, it didn’t matter. Gore or no Gore, the Giants suffered a crushing defeat to the up-and-coming Niners. Kendall Hunter took over at running back, earning 40 yards on the ground. Fortunately, Alex Smith had a great game through the air, connecting with multiple receivers on key plays to win the game. If Gore can avoid any further injuries, his play from scrimmage might just take this team all the way to the Super Bowl.
