Even with an INT, Jets’ Safety is OUT for the Season

If the season ended today, the AFC playoffs would be represented by Pittsburgh, New England, Cincinnati, Houston, Baltimore, and Denver. The Titans, Raiders, and New York Jets would be on the outside looking in. Fortunately for each of these three last competitors, the season does not end today. That means every game, every point, and every yard counts from here to the final whistle in the last game of regular season regulation.

In New York on Sunday, the Jets’ game against Kansas City was almost laughable (at least that’s what one writer called it). There were so many penalties called against the Chiefs that even the head coach got a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct. In other words, the Jets played great, the Chiefs played horribly, and all should be mean and green for New York ‘football’ fans. Not the case.

Safety Jim Leonhard intercepted the Chiefs QB Tyler Palko before the end of the half on a route that was meant for wideout Steve Breaston. Leonhard went up for the INT, Breaston grabbed his leg in the air, then he landed sharply on the turf. Walking to the sideline, Leonhard slowly went down and had to be helped off the field by his trainers. Fans in the stands took a deep breath. Yeah! for the interception, they thought, but Oh No! for the rest of the regular season. Word has it that Leonhard is out for at least the next three weeks. After that, who knows? Monday, he’ll undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the injury to his right knee. Some are saying ACL; others aren’t sure.

Turns out, Leonhard is at his best when the playoffs are on the line. Without him, even with a win against the Chiefs, this might be it for the Jets.
