Olympics 2012: Usain Ready to Bolt

They call him the Lightning Bolt for one reason and one reason alone: he’s faster than any man alive. Usain Bolt is currently the World and Olympic Record Holder for the 100 meter (9.58 sec) and 200 meter (19.19 sec) dash. And to put his speed in perspective, Bolt can run the length of a football field (100 yards) faster than it takes to zap fry a pop tart (10 seconds). Go figure.

But lately, Bolt has been struggling with a bad back that has had some indirect consequences for his hamstrings. Officials representing his spot in the 2012 London Olympics have expressed concern in recent weeks, but the announcement was just made on their official website that Bolt is in.

Referring to the concerns about his potential injury, Bolt said, “I had slight problems but nothing too serious. I got that fixed. I came to camp today and I felt that vibe.” In other words, he showed up in London and talked himself out of any lingering hesitations. For anyone to repeat or surpass their prior Olympic performance would be something of a miracle, but gold or not, Jamaicans will be proud to see him carry their flag when the opening ceremonies begin at 4pm on Friday, July 27.

The Weightlifter’s Thigh

Andrei Aramnau, a weightlifting gold medalist from the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, will not be competing in London this time around. Due to a torn muscle that caught him by surprise, he had to withdraw his name from contention.

“Unfortunately I pulled a muscle in my thigh,” he said. “It’s quite serious. It would take me about two months to recover, so London is out of the question.”

Since winning the gold in ’08, the 24 year old Aramnau has made some dangerous decisions that cost him a degree of personal confidence. Within two months of the ’08 Olympics, he was nabbed for driving under the influence. The following year, having learned nothing from the first offense, Aramnau received another DUI, only this time it meant giving up his license for two years.

Needless to say, the Belarussian athlete is not in the best of moods right now. In fact, he deflected much of the concern over his injury withdrawal on the coach.

“I was in great shape, but for whatever reason my coach had asked me to compete in a meaningless competition, where I first suffered the injury. Then this weekend, in my last competition before leaving for London, I tried to jerk a record weight and just aggravated it. That was it. The Olympics are now over for me.”

While London may be over for Aramnau, there’s always 2016. But he’s got a lot of baggage to resolve before that chance comes again.

Firefighter Injured During Philly Disruption

When the four alarms went off in North Philadelphia on Tuesday at about 2:30am, the warehouse blaze caught everyone’s attention, including some who had been sleeping in the surrounding neighborhoods. Even though the fire was declared ‘under control’ by 4:15, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) had to suspend service along the Market and Frankford route during the morning commute. A firefighter was rushed to Hahnemann University Hospital after sustaining a back injury from a fall in the 75 foot warehouse.

The decision by SEPTA to halt their trains was a result of speculation about what would happen to the building after the fire was contained. Should the building collapse, as some believed, it would fall directly onto the tracks and risk further danger and potential injuries to commuters. In order to protect residents from these risks, the Department of Licenses and Inspections arranged for an emergency demolition, leaving the grounds full of worn bricks and debris by the mid afternoon.

Inspectors are unclear as to how the fire started, but they are confident that their firefighter, who is currently unnamed, will be perfectly okay. His back injury did not appear to be life threatening or career compromising.

Williams, Federer Take Wimbledon

Serena Williams and Roger Federer are both in the thirtysomething category and both took home the honor of being called 2012 Wimbledon champions. Federer turns 31 in two months and has officially earned his seventh Wimbledon victory. Williams will turn 31 just a few weeks later and has won her fifth Wimbledon title. They are both at the top of their game, earning praise as two of the best tennis players to ever step on a court. But this was not the case for Federer just one week before the tournament.

Federer is known around the tennis world as an athlete who rarely, if ever, gets injured. And if he does, he conceals it very well. For someone who takes the kinds of twists and turns around the court that he does, Federer is incredibly agile. But last Monday, fans were alarmed by his casual reaction to a seven minute departure after the seventh game to have his back examined.

“I felt it going at the start of the first set. I guess it must be a mix of the five-setter in the last round, the two days off and the cold wind today. I’m honestly not too concerned, I’ve had bad backs over the years, they go as quickly as they come. Of course I have to keep an eye on it but two good nights’ sleep and I’ll be 100 per cent on Wednesday.”

Talk about someone being in tune with their body. Athletes are not always so fortunate, but he sure did put on a good show. As one player put it, “There’s no shame in losing to Roger Federer.” Especially when he puts his back into it.

Firework Safety is Mostly About the Children

There may be no better celebration in American life than the Fourth of July. Even Governor Romney and President Obama could probably shake hands for a few minutes over a barbeque dinner on the lawn of the White House (we’ll believe it when we see it, right?). Grills come out, volleyball nets go up, and the summer is in full swing.

Perhaps what’s most unifying to Americans is the moment when fireworks are set ablaze, igniting the sky and causing us to remember that this tradition is one of the few we can actually date all the way back to the beginning, when men like Washington, Adams, and Jefferson stood together to draft and conceive a new nation.

But with the use of fireworks comes a nasty possibility of injury. In 2010, the National Fireworks Related Injury Statistics recounted some interesting and sometimes shocking data.

  • Children under age 15 account for at least 40% of the estimated injuries
  • Children and young adults under age 20 account for 53% of the estimated injuries
  • Nearly 2,000 injuries were connected with sparklers and bottle rockets, often perceived to be the safest and least dangerous fireworks for children.

In other words, firework safety is, more than anything, about the safety of our children. Usually the best fireworks of the day are from the city you live, when the community comes together to watch a carefully planned celebration by adults who have been trained to handle and manage their presentation.

From all of us at the Brace Shop, please have a very safe and happy Fourth of July.

Supreme Court Rules; Injured Student Speaks Up

On Thursday, the Supreme Court made significant history, passing down their decision over the constitutionality of President Obama’s signature achievement, the Affordable Care Act. Pundits were sure in the days leading up to Thursday that the justices would overturn, if nothing else, the individual mandate, which obligates all Americans to obtain health insurance or pay a penalty when the market exchanges begin in 2014 (arguably to lower costs through ‘free market’ competition). Contrary to popular opinion, Chief Justice Roberts passed down his ruling of the 5-4 decision, supporting almost every word of the entire law.

Reactionary ripple effects were almost immediate. Some were mad. Others were relieved. But there was one young man who spoke up to share his thoughts. Ben Trockman, a 22 year old college student from Evansville, Indiana, was in a motocross accident when he was 17, causing a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the neck down. Over the last five years, Ben has made incredible progress as a result of cutting edge technology and practices that, according to him, would not have been available without health insurance.

“We learned, basically, how life is different with an injury such as mine,” said Trockman, “and how to deal with things on a day-to-day basis. We worked with different types of therapy, getting used to my wheelchair, knowing how to treat my body and how dangerous pressure sores were. We gained knowledge about so many important things that would have never been possible because of the extreme expenses, without health insurance. I figured out how much my body could do physically. I spent 3 months doing very intensive therapy, 5 hours a day. I learned so much about the way to treat my body with exercise and how important it was.

“And now, I look around my room, all the important things that make life a little easier… my wheelchair, my alternating air pressure mattress on my bed, the lift above my bed that helps move me to and from… NONE of that would have been affordable without health insurance.”

Much of the health care discussion over the last decade has hinged on the idea that young people don’t purchase insurance because they perceive themselves as less vulnerable to injury and disease, rendering insurance an unreasonable cost in their estimation. Members of both parties had initially been on board with the idea of the so-called individual mandate, requiring all Americans of a certain age to pay for insurance as a means of gaining revenue for a broken health care system. If more people invested into the system, the argument goes, there would be a greater amount of money in the pool, allowing providers to seemingly lower costs to the overall population of Americans who, at some point in their lives, will inevitably need and come under the care of a doctor. At least, that’s the idea. And if Ben has anything to say about it, the more people who have the assurance of care, the better off they’ll be in the long run. He certainly was.

Update: Hurricane Debby Spawns Tornado Injury

Across the State of Florida, word of mouth spread quickly as citizens asked one another, “Isn’t this a little early to be naming a fourth storm in the gulf?” Indeed it was. Indeed it is. In fact, for an average year, the fourth major storm wouldn’t have come anywhere near Florida until late August. So there is definitely something unique about Tropical Storm Debby.

On Tuesday, June 26, Debby made landfall at around 5pm near Steinhatchee, Florida. Within three hours, she had been downgraded to a tropical depression. However, major flooding continued through the night as waters rose in Jacksonville, leading to multiple water rescues and portions of Interstate 10 going through highway closures.

Perhaps most shocking was that Debby spawned a twister in rural Highlands County, Florida, where a woman, Heather Town, was killed and her three year old daughter, Ann Marie, was injured. The Town home was literally lifted from its foundations and tossed into the nearby woods. When rescue workers found the two, Heather was grasping her child, who was tangled in barbed wire and struggling to breathe. Ann Marie has proven resolute, coming through the tragedy with only a little pain, but she is sure to face an uphill battle emotionally as her extended family now works to comfort not only her, but Heather’s other two daughters, Amber and Angelica. Heather’s father, Elmer Town, considers his daughter a hero, saying that her sacrifice demonstrated exactly the kind of mother she was to her three girls.

As Debby continues to churn through Florida, losing steam throughout the week, citizens should be wary of other dangers, such as flooding and tornadoes, that often travel in the same path as the once frightening storm. Perhaps nothing could have prevented the Town tragedy, but we certainly hope that no one else has to endure such conditions for the remainder of this year’s fourth major storm.

Massachusetts Under the Radar

Over the last several years, the state of Massachusetts has been the subject of incredible political intrigue. First it was the death of Democratic Senator Ted Kennedy in August of 2009, followed by the stunning election of little known Republican Scott Brown as Kennedy’s replacement. Then came the issue of Romneycare, a state-run universal health care program signed into law by 2012’s presumptive GOP Nominee, Mitt Romney, who declares that he will immediately destroy the so-called Obamacare (modeled after Romneycare) if he is elected president in November. But in all the hub-bub over politics, the beloved New England state has proven that they are incredibly good at something everyone else should be acutely aware: injury prevention.

Trust for America’s Health, along with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation have ranked states according to their injury statistics as well as a checklist of policies related to injury prevention. According to the report, Massachusetts has the third lowest rate of injury-related deaths, meaning that the severity of injuries incurred by residents is not as high as they might be elsewhere in the country. Only California and New York ranked higher in legislative policies for injury prevention. The state might have raised their credibility if law enforcement officers had the right to pull people over for not wearing their seatbelts, but legislators don’t appear to be rushing any bills through the floor on the issue.

While it may be politically volatile as voters consider its relationship to the 2012 Presidential Election, there is one thing we know for sure: Massachusetts flies under the radar as a pretty safe place to live.

Life After the Neck Brace

Last January, the Brace Shop made its readers aware of a serious neck injury that struck an R&B singer named Jason Derulo. Since that time, Derulo has been making news on American Idol, offering to deliver a song that the public would help him write. Tonight, he debuted the new song, titled ‘Undefeated’, proving once again that he is a dancing powerhouse to be reckoned with on the stage.

Rumors were also laid to rest about his relationship with Season Six American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks. During his performance of ‘Undefeated’, the camera panned to her beaming face, singing along the words to her beau’s new hit single. Were those stars in her eyes? Probably.

Derulo has proven to be a perfect example of life with and life after a neck brace. If you’ll remember, he donned a diamond covered neck brace back in April, showing that he wasn’t going to let a silly, obnoxious little injury keep him down (oh, those broken necks). Of course, we cut him some slack on that recovery since, well, he had a little bit more money to play with than the rest of us. But all kidding aside, his efforts to battle back from a serious injury were a powerful demonstration of the willpower that can turn a tragedy into a victory. Fortunately, for customers of the Brace Shop, our prices are affordable and our support is unmatched.

Injury Ends Campaign in Iowa

Running for Congress is a venture that often costs its candidates everything they have and more. Perhaps our version of American politics will always be a rich man’s game, but history continues to be written by the underdogs who came to their races with nothing and walked away with more than half the ballots in their favor. Unfortunately, for Mike McRae of Iowa, his West Des Moines campaign had to be suspended this week as a result of an injury he sustained with his family in North Carolina.

McCrae was hoping to offer ‘better representation’ for the 42nd District seat in the Iowa House. He recently graduated from Drake Law School and was close to facing off against Peter Cownie, a two term congressman from the same community. Without McCrae in the race, Cownie will be running unopposed in the general election come November.

Specifics about the McCrae accident have not been made public, but the results are shocking and peculiar. Apparently, he was unconscious for nearly five minutes, ultimately injuring his neck, ribs, and right leg. The secrecy of the accident is unusual, considering the severity of his condition, but McCrae ended his campaign with the evidence of a difficult decision.

“I am not making this decision lightly. I am committed to the belief that District 42 deserves better representation. It is unfortunate that I have to suspend my campaign at this time, but I need to focus on recovering.”

Indeed he should. Whether or not McCrae would have been the right or wrong choice for Iowa, American politics will, as always, go on and on regardless of how many candidates fall to the curb.
