Bach, Famed American Author, Injured in Ironic Plane Crash

Richard Bach is well known for his books about flying and his long held belief that human beings must learn to look beyond their physical limitations. As a pilot in the New Jersey Air National Guard, Bach developed more than an appreciation of flight, but a compelling desire to encourage all men and women to experience life above the clouds. As man of fearless abandon, Bach is now in his late 70s and often flies alone. Such was the case on August 31, when his aircraft caught the cables of a power line during his landing on San Juan Island in the northern archipelago of Washington State, then crashed along the grass outside the runway.

Remarkably, Bach escaped the plane with only a head injury and a broken shoulder. His aircraft was upside down and sparks were flying from the broken cable, yet nothing more serious occurred. This is not to make light of the serious injuries he now battles, but we can be sure that his family and friends are standing by his side at this time.

James Bach, his son, says that “things are looking better” and “doctors are guardedly optimistic.”

We wish Mr. Bach and his family all the best in recovery.

Sanchez Shoulder May Have Prompted Tebow Signing

Deep down, no one really hates the New York Jets the way they might hate the New England Patriots, the New York Giants, or the Dallas Cowboys. Somewhere deep down, there’s a Joe Namath in every football fan, hoping for a day when ‘Gang Green’ shows up in the Super Bowl and guarantees a victory against the bigger, better team. But for now, the Jets are fodder for growing controversy. Not the least of which is last year’s starting quarterback, Mark Sanchez.

We say ‘last year’ because no one knows what will happen in 2012. According to Plaxico Burress, who played with Sanchez in 2011, the once famed rookie was battling a shoulder injury that he chose to conceal and has yet to address.

“He definitely has enough arm,” said Burress. “He was battling some injuries last year, shoulder-wise that a lot of people didn’t know about… different things like that.”

And different things like that? What other injuries did he conceal? We’d really like to know.

During the offseason, the Jets acquired Tim Tebow from the Denver Broncos, creating a quarterback controversy that’s likely to carry through the season as much as both men try to be friendly. Neither man wants the bench, but neither man has proved to be awe-inspiring at their position on a consistent basis. Add a bad shoulder to the Sanchez image and he might just be out of New York before he knows it.

Brett Favre used to push himself through shoulder injuries as well, but most of us recognize the need to care for our ailing bodies. If you’ve got a shoulder injury, get some support right away.

Serving a Torn Abdomen

Several months ago, Sophomore Maho Kowase, an incredibly talented tennis player from the University of Georgia, dropped from a serve that literally ripped her abdomen. Tennis athletes rarely think twice about tossing the ball in the air, stretching up with the racket, then slamming the ball across the net. But the truth is, when the body reaches up with a sudden jolt, there is always a risk that muscles will tear unexpectedly. Kowase is living proof.

Kowase is originally from Kashiwa, Chiba, Japan, where she won the 2009 Japan Inter High School singles title. She went on to win the 2009 All Japan Junior Tennis Championship, then earn a spot in the Australian Open Junior Qualifying event. All of these prepared her for a chance to become a star with the Georgia Bulldogs. Unfortunately, when she became injured, doctors demanded she do absolutely no exercising. A torn abdomen was simply too serious to allow a careless stretch that might aggravate the soreness and pain. All she could do was watch her team play and offer encouragement. What did she do in the meantime?

“I went out and had fun with my friends,” said Kowase. “I didn’t go crazy, but I had more time and it was nice to use it.”

Truer words have never been spoken by a hard-working athlete. Sometimes an injury gives us the time we need to spend with the people we love in our lives. Now that Kowase is playing tennis again, she has the added support of many teammates who continue to believe she has what it takes to come back in full form.

Life After Rugby

Across the western hemisphere of the globe, the most popular sports include football, soccer and basketball. But across the eastern hemisphere, they take all of those sports and roll ’em into one. It’s a game they like to call rugby. And for Daniel Vickerman, age 32, this game has taken up more than half his life. That is, until he became known as a serious injury risk to his team, the New South Wales Waratahs. Most recently, a stress fracture in his leg has Vickerman thinking about retirement.

Fortunately for his young athlete, sports isn’t his only endeavor. Vickerman went back to the University of Cambridge to earn a degree in Land Economy. Clearly, the man was exploring his options. The Waratahs had already listed his status as questionable because of a shoulder injury he sustained in the previous year. Professionals are expecting a decision to be made by Vickerman within the next several days and if he does, officially, retire, then this will mean a detrimental blow to the Welsh province.

Professional rugby, for those interested, can be viewed on ESPN Scrum, an online resource for all news and schedules.

Super Bowl XLVI: Giants Crush Patriots… Again!

Sunday night’s Super Bowl rematch between the New York Giants and New England Patriots ended like the script of a classic movie. Just four years ago, a scrappy quarterback named Eli Manning (often called the lesser brother of Peyton the Great) went up against an undefeated and three time Super Bowl winner in Tom Brady. That story ended with Manning on top, hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in the midst of falling confetti; Giants win Super Bowl XLII, 17-14. Fast forward to November 6, 2011 when that once scrappy quarterback does it all over again; Giants win 24-20 during the regular season. Fast forward to February 5, 2012 in a spectacular matchup that pitted Manning against Brady, for a third time in five years; Giants win Super Bowl XLVI, 21-17.

At the beginning of the season, Eli Manning was still being questioned as one of the elite quarterbacks of the NFL. When asked about it, he was honest: “Yes I am.” Then the season began and his team was struggling to stay afloat. At one point, the Giants were 7-7 and playing for just a slight chance at the postseason. After topping the first and second seed Packers and Niners, Manning carved his way onto the biggest stage of professional sports, where he is now in line for the Hall of Fame ahead of his brother, Peyton, having mastered and consistently beaten the last decade’s most successful franchise in New England.

During the course of the game, four Giants players went down: Travis Beckham with a torn ACL, Hakeem Nicks with a shoulder injury, Jake Ballard with a left knee sprain, and Antrel Rolle with an injury that went undiscussed by the commentators. In other words, not only did Manning find a way to win for the third time in five years against Tom Brady and the Patriots, but he did it while his best receivers kept reaching for medical attention. We here at the Brace Shop call that more than amazing. We call that elite. And the NFL agreed, giving Eli Manning a second Super Bowl MVP award.

Congratulations to the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants.

2012 AFC Championship Game

Between the two conferences vying for their chance to play in the Super Bowl, only the AFC managed to turn out as everyone expected. On Sunday, the New England Patriots will host the Baltimore Ravens, two teams that have been ‘in the hunt’ for the better part of the last decade. During the last ten years alone, New England has won four AFC Championships and three Super Bowls; Baltimore has also earned a Super Bowl win and an AFC title. Even when neither team was in the AFC Championship, their presence was almost always felt in the playoffs. So now that it’s down to a relentless defense from the Ravens and a star studded offense from the Patriots, let’s talk injuries.

Word has it that Tom Brady skipped practice on Monday because of a lagging injury to his non-throwing shoulder. For those who sat down to watch Brady teach Tebow how to play football last weekend, it’s hard to remember a time when the New England quarterback was even touched by the defense. So why rest the shoulder? No one knows, but you can bet Terrell Suggs, Ray Lewis and the rest of the Ravens will be looking for a chance to put Brady on the ground and further injure that shoulder.

On the other hand, the Baltimore defense was a little shaken up in their win over Houston. Safety Ed Reed slammed into the grass while trying to capture an interception and hasn’t been quite the same since. Apparently, his ankle twisted in the backwards fall, but x-rays determined that he had no serious injury, even though he got up slowly and hobbled off the field. Whether that leads to a shaky performance against the Patriots, well, that’s why they play the game.

Brady Quietly Hides From Scrutiny

At this point in his career, there’s no denying that Tom Brady is the closest thing to a reincarnation of Joe Montana. He has three Super Bowl Championships (even though he’s played in four and only lost that perfect season on a crazy, cinderella pass from Eli Manning to David Tyree), two Super Bowl MVPs, seven Pro Bowls, and two NFL MVPs. Brady has been called the Sportsman of the Year (2005) and the Male Athelete of the Year (2007), all while he continues to chip away at record after record. At 34, the star quarterback isn’t finished competing for another championship (lest we remind our readers that both Montana and Pittsburgh’s Terry Bradshaw have won four Super Bowls each).

But right now, even with a lock on the first seed in the AFC, New England is trying their darndest to keep Brady’s shoulder injury on the hush hush. Stacey James, spokesman for the Patriots, has been very testy on the issue. “If there was an injury, it would be on the injury report,” he said on Thursday. Ouch. Most people would have simply said, “yes” or “no” to the question of whether his shoulder was really injured.

If Brady is actually hurt, he can thank division opponent Kevin Burnett (Miami Dolphins) who drilled his shoulder into the ground with just a couple of minutes left in the game last Sunday. If healthy this week against the Bills, Brady has the potential to surpass the exact same record that Drew Brees just achieved last week: most passing yards in the regular season. Marino set the record at 5,084 in 1984, Brees reached 5,087 on Sunday, and Brady is just a little over 100 yards from both quarterbacks.

What Ever Happened to Favre?

Little more than a year ago, the Brace Shop published an article about Brett Favre, who ended his 297 consecutive starts record and had to watch his Minnesota Vikings play from the sideline. At the time, Favre had a sprain to his sternoclavicular joint (neck/shoulder), which not only impacted his ability to throw, but also affected the feeling in his hands and arms. As usual, commentators and football fans spent the entire offseason discussing whether Favre would come back and play for yet another year, delaying the inevitable retirement that almost everyone in the NFL wanted him to take. Well, Favre didn’t come back and the football gods were finally able to rest.

Then just a couple of weeks ago, there was chatter in Texas about having the Texans bring him in to replace the injured Matt Schaub and backup Matt Leinart. That conversation faded just in time for rumors to begin in Chicago. Quarterback Jay Cutler went out with a thumb injury, leaving the once sure playoff bound Bears to rely almost entirely on the arm of Caleb Hanie (and the unbelievable defense of Brian Urlacher). Fast thinking Head Coach Lovie Smith seemed to be hoping that Cutler would be back in time for the playoffs is his team had a star quarterback to at least keep them from losing their spot in the postseason. But alas, neither the rumors in Texas or the Rumors in Illinois are true, if we are to believe the words of Favre himself, whose personal website says the following:

“In spite of reports about playing with various teams, I’m enjoying retirement with my family and have no plans to play football. I haven’t contacted nor have been contacted by any teams and all reports are inaccurate.”

And that’s what happened to Brett Favre. He actually stopped and started relaxing that shoulder.

The Unrelated NASCAR Injury

The win wasn’t pretty, but Tony Stewart took home his third NASCAR title on Sunday at the Sprint Cup season finale. No injuries on the track and no serious concerns during the race, but there was a unique injury to team owner Rick Hendrick, whose ribs were broken on Halloween night (October 31) when his plane ran off the runway after landing at Key West International Airport.

Both Hendrick and his wife were released on the following Tuesday, but Rick was said to have suffered one broken rib and a broken collarbone. Later examination proved that he had actually broken four ribs in addition to his clavicle.

The small Gulfstream G150, owned and operated by Hendrick Motorsports, had some braking issues, but the pilots were able to maneuver the aircraft away from danger. Approximately 800 feet from the runway is a safety area, which is followed be a perimeter fence. The pilots are being called ‘heroes’ for their quick response to a tough situation.

“I’m so proud of how our pilots handled the situation,” said Hendricks, “and we’re extremely appreciative of the folks in Key West who went above and beyond to help us.”

With Shaw and Manuel Down, Sooners Win

The field and the stands were silent when Florida State receiver, Kenny Shaw dropped a pass in the end zone and fell unconscious. Even the Oklahoma players took a knee to pray for their opponent. At least ten minutes passed before anyone saw movement from Shaw, causing some to wonder if his neck had been injured when his head came between the helmets of two colliding Sooners. But as he was being carted off the field, a thumb went up to fans and within an hour, doctors were walking him back to the field so that he could witness the end of the game, where his Seminoles fell to the #1 Sooners 23-13 on Saturday night.

Quarterback EJ Manuel had his own injury to overcome in the third quarter when a linebacker managed to plow the passer into the turf, leading to a bruised shoulder. Manuel tried to shake it off on multiple downs, only to demonstrate to his coaches and his fans that he was in utter agony. Backup quarterback Clint Trickett had his bright moments, but he lacked movement in the pocket, which cost the game.

Florida State fans will have to shake off the loss and admit, thankfully, that neither Manuel or Shaw were seriously injured for the long haul. Shaw, as it turns out, suffered a moment ‘lights out’ concussion and Manuel just needed to rest a bruise. Both young men should be back on the field next week when the Noles go up against Clemson. In the meantime, Oklahoma survived a week of smack-talking Florida State fans only to leave Tallahassee with yet another victory for the record books.
