Neoprene Playmaker Brace

Neoprene is a synthetic rubber material designed to be flexible, durable, and to resist breakdown by water. Neoprene has been used for over 75 years. In its application to braces and supports, it is very form fitting and resilient to the stresses placed on it.

Neoprene is a very popular material for cold weather sports such as skiing and snowboarding, and is used extensively in water sports.

Neoprene braces are ideal supports to provide uniform compression over an extremity such as the knee or elbow. Neoprene’s heat retention properties is preferred by some to help ease the pain of a joint due to arthritis and muscle strain.

The disadvantage of Neoprene is know to many parents who pick up their child’s brace, with an odor that is hard to describe and tolerate. Neoprene is not a breathable material, and therefore retains the sweat and perspiration of the skin at the surface. Many people have allergies to Neoprene, causing skin rashes, blistering, itching and more severe allergic reactions.

Elastic material is not a good alternative as it does not stretch like neoprene, nor does it have the compressive qualities and durability of neoprene.

DonJoy developed a material referred to as “Drytex” as an alternative to Neoprene.

Drytex is a material made of a Nylon core and Polyester Lycra fabric, which retains the durability and compressive advantages of Neoprene, but is breathable and non-allergenic.

Drytex braces are more comfortable to wear compared to Neoprene, with the absence of the foul odor usually associated with its counterpart.

So how do I tell the difference between the two materials?

Simply lift the material up to light and stretch the material. If light shines through, it is a breathable material. If there is no light seen, it is probably neoprene.

If you are in a warm weather climate, and participate in sports such as Basketball, Football, Soccer, Tennis and Golf, then Drytex is an alternative to Neoprene. If you have allergies to Latex and Neoprene, Drytex is an excellent choice for support.

This material is only found in select manufacturers like DonJoy. It usually is not found in retail stores.

It is important to consult with your treating doctor prior to purchasing any orthopedic brace. There are many choices to be made when deciding which knee brace to purchase.

Product Review – The Bauerfeind Genutrain Knee Brace

Many athletes & patients ask me what is the most comfortable knee brace on the market? There is no doubt that products by Bauerfeind USA, have historically been the most comfortable and durable elastic braces in the world. As one of the leading medical device manufacturers, Bauerfeind makes an important contribution to maintaining and restoring health, with an unrivaled commitment to quality.

The Bauerfeind Genutrain knee Brace is an anatomically contoured knit support that is breathable and stretched by spiral stays on the sides of the brace. It is a slip on brace with a special knitting technique that make the support extremely comfortable to wear. The brace is only made in Germany.

The high grade elastic knit material is the hallmark of this brace, and is the reason for its popularity among many patients who suffer from arthritis, tendonitis and chondromalacia of the knee.

This is not your typical store brand elastic knee brace.

A circular viscoelastic donut surrounds the knee cap and helps correct the position of the patella to prevent tracking and patella instability. This insert redistributes pressure away from the knee cap to the surrounding soft tissue.

As the knee flexes and extends, the visco donut moves with the knee cap, thereby massaging the surrounding tissue, helping to control swelling and inflammation.

This massage effect is ideal for older patients with arthritis and swelling in the knee, and for people that cannot tolerate the more aggressive arthritic hinged type braces.

Another unique feature that Bauerfeind does with all their knee braces is to lower the compression of the brace around the edges of the thigh and calf areas. This produces a gradual reduction of pressure at both ends of the support and prevents constriction bands from developing in the lower leg. This feature is ideal for patients with diminished circulation.

The brace is low profile and provides exceptional uniform compression. The Genutrain is very popular for golf and tennis as it does not interfere with mobility, flexibility and side to side movement like some hinged type braces.

The Genutrain is available in black, titanium and nature colors. It comes in 7 different sizes and is universal for the left or right leg. The brace is a little pricy due to the US Dollar vs. Euro, but once you put it on, that difference goes away. Product Review – The New Swede-O Thermoskin Heel-Rite

Anybody who has been diagnosed with plantar fasciitis is very familiar with the sometimes disabling pain on the bottom of the foot when they get up in the morning, or after sitting for a prolonged period of time. There is a wide range of treatment options available from taping, pain medication, arch supports, night splints and cortisone injections. A new treatment option is now available from Swede-O Inc. called the Heel-Rite Ankle Support.

The plantar fascia is a band of fibrous tissue that originates on the inner portion of the heel bone and fans out under the arch to the balls of the feet and inserts into the toes. It forms the longitudinal arch of the foot and functions as a shock-absorber when you walk or run. Irritation or inflammation of the plantar fascia occurs primarily at its attachment to the heel bone or calcaneus.

Symptoms of plantar fasciitis usually occur in the morning when the patient gets out of bed. The pain usually subsides after a couple of minutes, but returns with prolonged sitting. This is due to a tightening or contracture of the plantar fascia at rest. When standing the fascia stretches “suddenly” causing pain at the insertion. As the fascia “stretches out”, the pain subsides. If untreated, the pain worsens and increases in duration. Plantar fasciitis is further aggravated by poor fitting shoes, barefoot ambulation, and aggressive sports activities.

Treatment for plantar fasciitis is usually conservative in nature. Rest, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, padding, alternative shoe gear, arch supports, orthotics, stretching exercises usually improve the condition. Cortisone injections are sometimes necessary to reduce severe pain, and if conservative treatment and time have not improved the condition, surgery is sometimes indicated.

Arch supports and orthotics (custom made arch supports) are a very popular treatment modality among Podiatrists, Chiropractors and Therapists and have proven very successful in controlling abnormal gait, excessive pronation and support of the plantar fascia. In many instances, these devices cannot be worn due to shoegear restrictions. Since most of the damage and irritation of the plantar fascia occurs during the day, with prolonged standing, walking and physical activity, an alternative to orthotics and arch supports was limited. Until Swede-O developed a unique and supportive brace called The Heel-Rite.

The Heel-Rite is a combination ankle brace and arch support. The patented Heel-Rite provides effective daytime treatment for Plantar Fasciitis. The Heel-Rite is comfortable to wear and low profile in design.

The brace contains a support strap that lifts the arch and provide compression to the plantar fascia and stabilization of the longitudinal arch.

Another unique feature of the Heel-Rite is the brace material. Swede-O utilizes a Thermoskin Thermal fabric that has been clinically proven to increase subcutaneous skin temperature 2-3°F for optimal level of heat therapy. Thermoskin’s patented Trioxon® lining creates a micro-climate that maintains elevated skin temperature while still allowing the skin to ventilate for long-term user comfort. The spiral structure of the Trioxon lining lifts moisture away from the skin and traps air within the lining to help prevent excessive perspiration.

This combination of ankle and foot stability, heat therapy, and arch support with compression makes this a great alternative to bulky arch supports and orthotic inserts. The Heel-Rite fits into most shoes and is very adjustable, coming in just two sizes. It is universal for left or right ankles. More more information CLICK HERE.
