The Unrelated NASCAR Injury

The win wasn’t pretty, but Tony Stewart took home his third NASCAR title on Sunday at the Sprint Cup season finale. No injuries on the track and no serious concerns during the race, but there was a unique injury to team owner Rick Hendrick, whose ribs were broken on Halloween night (October 31) when his plane ran off the runway after landing at Key West International Airport.

Both Hendrick and his wife were released on the following Tuesday, but Rick was said to have suffered one broken rib and a broken collarbone. Later examination proved that he had actually broken four ribs in addition to his clavicle.

The small Gulfstream G150, owned and operated by Hendrick Motorsports, had some braking issues, but the pilots were able to maneuver the aircraft away from danger. Approximately 800 feet from the runway is a safety area, which is followed be a perimeter fence. The pilots are being called ‘heroes’ for their quick response to a tough situation.

“I’m so proud of how our pilots handled the situation,” said Hendricks, “and we’re extremely appreciative of the folks in Key West who went above and beyond to help us.”
